The Way Too Early Grammys Prognostications- Part 1

By Alan Ho

The gifts are unwrapped.  You’re probably stuffed full of food and other things and emotions.  You might even be back at work because you were unable to take the rest of the year off say “see you on January 3!”

But the Grammys are coming and before you know it, it’s February.  And since we got nothing better to do as the infamous dead period is almost upon us between New Year’s and February 10, we got some way-too-early predictions for key and major categories for the 2019 Grammys!

Record of the Year
I Like It- Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin
The Joke- Brandi Carlile
This Is America- Childish Gambino
God’s Plan- Drake
Shallow- Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper
All The Stars- Kendrick Lamar & SZA
Rockstar- Post Malone ft. 21 Savage
The Middle- Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey

Prediction- This Is America- Childish Gambino
Who will win- This Is America- Childish Gambino
Who should win- The Middle- Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey

Look, you gotta be honest, we are living in very interesting times and while it would be safe for the Academy to pick “The Middle,” I expect the Academy to continue to send subliminal messages to the current occupant of the White House and pick Childish Gambino’s scathing commentary on the state of the country.

Album of the Year
Invasion of Privacy– Cardi B
By The Way, I Forgive You– Brandi Carlile
Scorpion– Drake
H.E.R.- H.E.R.
Beerbongs & Bentleys– Post Malone
Dirty Computer– Janelle Monae
Golden Hour– Kacey Musgraves
Black Panther: The Album, Music From And Inspired By– Various Artists

Prediction- Scorpion
Who will win- Scorpion
Who should win- By The Way, I Forgive You

Who really should win?  Should be Brandi Carlile’s By The Way, I Forgive You and not just because I know her publicity rep (that helps).  She should win because it should show that the Grammys actually care about good ol’ fashioned guitar driven genres.  But lately, they don’t, continuing the perception that music has devolved into every genre getting imbibed with EDM or hip-hop.  So Drake’s Scorpion will continue the trend of guitar-driven genres getting the shaft.

Best New Artist
Chloe x Halle
Luke Combs
Greta Van Fleet
Dua Lipa
Margo Price
Bebe Rexha
Jorja Smith

Prediction:  Dua Lipa
Who will win:  Jorja Smith
Who should win:  Greta Van Fleet

Good old fashioned rock music should win but it won’t so Greta Van Fleet will likely strike out even though the Kiszka brothers are making magic and putting the rock back into rock after its supposed death by a thousand EDM knives.  It probably then should be Dua Lipa by just a smidge over Bebe Rexha just on the strength of their albums alone even if Rexha can transcend multiple genres.  But the Academy has a tendency to pick someone relatively unknown on the list and the list has plenty of people overshadowed by Combs, Rexha and Lipa but in the end, the Academy will pick rising UK newcomer Jorja Smith out of the hat.

That’s all the prognostication power I can pull off right now the day after Christmas.  See you next time!
