Whether you know him from his “Drake and Josh” days or from his first album, “It’s Only Time”, you will love the ever-consistent music of Drake Bell. Drake returns with an EP that is highly reminiscent of his first CD but why mess with something that is already great, right? It seemed that Drake Bell stepped off the map for a few years but he never slowed down. Though he may not have been as present in the United States music scene, Drake was off taking over the rest of the world. With a fan base that strong, it’s no wonder he returned to the U.S. for a second try. “A Reminder” is filled with light, fun, mood-lifting songs that are perfect for just driving around or for anyone in need of a smile.

The first song that can be heard on the EP is “Terrific”, which also happens to be the first single. This 60s-esque track is a solid choice for a first single. The track itself is slightly different than Drake’s normal style in the sense that, rather than the up-tempo, bubble-gum pop beat, he uses a more sophisticated slew of instruments and melodies.

The lyrics only help to emphasize his creative shift. With lyrics like “You are not yourself here/You are someone else dear/Aren't you terrific?/Aren't you terrific now?”, it’s a song that gets you wondering about the girl he is talking about.

“You’re Not Thinking” is Bell’s return to what he knows well. As soon as the song begins playing, it is stamped with his signature. Behind the bubble-gum pop beat and track, there are lyrics describing a situation that many people have been in. Drake describes a girl who comes crawling back, but only because they’re lonely.

The lyrics “So please, please, please, you gotta let me go/You, you, you, you don't even know you're not thinking/You're not thinking about me” show that he is trying to push her away because he knows she really doesn’t want him back, she just wants the idea of him. If that’s not relatable, then I’m not sure what is.

Next comes “Big Shot”. The piano intro in the beginning almost sounds like the beginning of “Grace Kelly” by Mika. This song seems to be Bell’s way of speaking to America about who he is and who he’s not. The lyrics “I'm no big shot, big town, big money/Off to buy a jet/Fly it all around the country” tell his listeners that this isn’t the person they want them to see him as.

Everyone has felt like a burden to someone at some time in his or her life. Judging by the lyrics “If I’m too much to carry/Just put down gently”, it seems Drake knows this feeling too. However, the harmonies and general feel of the song do nothing to separate it from all of the others.

Overall, “A Reminder” is an EP filled with high quality songs. Unfortunately, melodies and harmonies cause most of these songs to be very reminiscent of his older music, some may say it’s too similar. Since this is a gateway to a full-length CD, there is always hope so some variation to come. The bottom line is, however, that Drake Bell is a very talented artist who, once again, released high quality material. If you’re a fan of his, you will enjoy Drake sticking to what he knows. For those who haven’t heard his music before, this EP is definitely worth picking up. There’s no need to fix something that isn’t broken and Drake Bell’s music is 100% in tact.
