America, get ready for a new wild child in music. She is in the form of Estonian pop princess Kerli. One part Avril and one part Amy Lee, she brings a kind of sound that can be only described as unique, much like the person that is crafting it. Looking for some exposure and success here in the U.S., here is Spencer's hot seater with the honest and refreshing budding pop sensation.
Spencer: What or who inspired you to start writing and performing?
Kerli: I guess the right answer for this is loneliness. I always wanted to get out of where I was born and because I wasn't able to for a long time, I had to learn how to dream and create my own world that I could escape to. The world where I could be understood.
And that dream of becoming a singer kinda naturally grew into a big passion for music and writing.
S: What or who is your favorite band or musician?
K: There are so many...
Sigur Ros, Bjork, Mew, Skunk Anansie, Aphex twin, Placebo, Imogen heap, A perfect circle, Cocteau twins, Pendulum, Joni Mitchell, Apparat, Mae, Kidney Thieves, Massive attack, prodigy, Janis Joplin, Boards of candada, explosions in the sky, 2pac, E.S.T, Foo fighters, Coldplay, Anna Ternheim, Lamb, Incubus, Jose Gonzalez, Deftones, Hooverphonic and LOTS of classical music.
I hear things that I love all the time but I have a hard time remembering all the names.
S: Are your friends and family supportive of you?
K: Yes, they are supportive. However, they don't really understand what I'm doing here. I almost never talk about my work when I'm in Estonia. The way I'm living here is so different from the way I lived there.
So, even if I would try to explain what I do, I don't think I could. Instead, I'm trying to absorb all the things that I miss about Estonia.
S: What is your favorite song to perform live?
K: Something weird with lots of effects on my voice so I could go crazy
S: Do you have any place where you would love to go to and perform?
K: I wanna perform in a place where I can make someone’s day. No matter what that place is.
S: What's your all time favorite song?
K: “Sugarplum Fairy” by Tchaikovsky...or Tupac “Changes” :) I fell in love with that song when I was 11 and every time I hear it now I'm all "awwww":)
S: If you weren't a musician what would you want to do?
K: You know, not being a musician is really not an option in this life, but there are many other things I wanna do too. I wanna travel the world, live in a cave in India, build a fairy house in the forest, maybe manage an artist one day, fly to the moon, write a book, study interior design, learn to dive, be a kindergarten teacher, learn how to play cello, start a religion, grow black tulips, be the best mother, and so on:)
The most important - I want to learn something new and be a better person every day.
S: Did you take any kind of music lessons as a kid? Like an instrument or voice?
K: Yes. I studied piano for five years before I quit and decided that I wanna learn singing instead. So I did for a few years.
I don't really think you can learn how to sing. You can get better at it with someone’s help but there's gotta be something there to work with already.
S: What's your philosophy on music?
K: My philosophy on music is the same as it is on life.
I do what I feel. I dream a lot and I'm not afraid to work my ass off. And I try to have fun and enjoy the journey.
I also try not to take things very seriously and have fun with it. The moment someone starts calling something their own and holds on to it too tight, it is sure to slip away.
S: How long dos it normally take you to write a song?
K: From 30 seconds to 3 days:) some babies just need more time to grow.
S: Where is your favorite place to just go away to when you get stressed out?
K: I like being alone. Wherever that is.
S: Where would you like to be 5 years from now?
K: I'd like to be happy. The rest of it I wouldn't want to know, even if I could. Life is all about surprises and changes and weird stuff. I'm excited.
