When searching for the right words to describe indie bands or artists, more often than not I can always compare their music or sound to the likes of mainstream bands or artists. However, I am more than happy to say that this is not the case with San Francisco, CA based band DownDownDown. DownDownDown members Jayce Basques, Jeff Harber, Adam Humphrey, Aaron Prim and Arielle Rothman have created a sound that is entirely their own. I cannot compare them to anything or anyone else because their music is truly unique. In fact, if you visit DownDownDown's official facebook page it states that their music is usually described as "indescribable."
The first time I heard DownDownDown's music, the first thought that popped into my mind was that it didn't sound like anything I had ever heard before. In my opinion, this is a very positive attribute. Being unique and indescribable are two very positive features to have. In the music industry, it's better to be different than to be strung together with all of the artists or bands that have exactly the same sound. Part of what makes DownDownDown different is their combination of male (Jeff Harber) and female (Arielle Rothman) vocals. You're getting two sides to one story when listening to their music.
On their current EP entitled Say Hello To C'est La Vie, each song plays out like a story. Each song has the featured dual vocals and is put together well, musically. One of the best things about these songs is that they offer two different perspectives but are able to come together in the chorus for fantastic harmonies. Say Hello To C'est La Vie is fun, energetic and has a little bit of everything. It's a little bit pop and it's a little bit soul. It's something that you can sit down and feel the lyrics of the music but you can also jam out to it and blast it in your car.
Currently, DownDownDown has a lot on their plate. Their EP, Say Hello To C'est La Vie is out right now and available on Itunes, they've been trying to work on some new stuff and they're on tour with Universal Motown artist, Damato. DownDownDown serves as Damato’s live band. They aren’t strangers to being on the road either seeing as they have done lots of their own shows before hooking up with Damato.
I was able to sit down and chat with DownDownDown in their studio before they hit the road with Damato and Parachute. To learn more about DownDownDown, their music, how they were formed and to hear some hilarious stories, watch this exclusive interview. And as a special treat,
you are able to listen to each song on their EP, Say Hello To C'est La Vie right here on Musiqtone.com. My personal favorite is Ruler Of My Heart but you can choose for yourself.
