Ten years after the release of their last studio album, Lines, Vines, and Trying Times, the band of brothers has reunited. With a new Amazon Prime documentary, a worldwide tour, and a new album, the trio has made 2019 their comeback year.

March brought along a revived love from fans all over the world with their first single, “Sucker,” which climbed up the Billboard 100 and iTunes charts. The hit song featured an accompanying music video that featured the brothers’ wives - a move that would showcase the theme of their long-awaited album - Happiness Begins.

Inferred from the title, the album features fourteen tracks that are, for the most part, dedicated to the boys’ significant others. As stated by both Nick and Joe Jonas in numerous interviews, the tracks “I Believe” and “Hesitate” are love letters to their new wives Priyanka Chopra and Sophie Turner. Following the relaxed, yet lyrically sentimental ballad trend is “Love Her.”

Aside from the ballads, Happiness Begins showcases a different, one could even say a more mature sound from the Jonas Brothers of 2006-2013. Gone are the super poppy, sugary tracks. in their place are slowed down songs that feel almost a little more R&B than pop. Some songs - “Only Human” and “Every Single Time” - even feature what seems to be a reggae influence.

Rounding out the album are tracks “Rollercoaster” and “Comeback”. The former conveys a different message than the accompanying songs, seeming to be a reflection on the brothers’ lives and careers up to this point, stating, “It was fun when we were young, and now we’re older. Those days when we were broke in California. We were up and down and barely made it over, but I’d go back and ride that rollercoaster.” The latter, “Comeback”, returns to the love song theme the rest of the album follows.

Other notable tracks, aside from the hot summer songs, “Sucker” and “Cool”, include “Used to Be” and “Trust.”

Overall, Happiness Begins, is an homage to the source of the boys’ happiness - their significant others and families. Personally, I was expecting to hear a little more influence from Nick and Joe’s solo careers and more tracks that were similar to their two singles, “Sucker” and “Cool,” but for a comeback album that’s reflective of the current time in their lives, Happiness Begins incites a sense of contentment and joy within listeners. It invokes a sense of happiness with its very easy-going, relaxed, sentimental tracks - the perfect album to mark the start of a new chapter in the Jonas Brothers’ legacy.
