The talented, yet unique, music guru Shwayze has taken the world by storm. With his new show hitting MTV, and the release of his new album, Shwayze has become an international phenomenon. Luckily, Shwayze took a few minutes out of his busy day to conduct an interview with me.
Samantha: How are you feeling today?
Shwayze: Im doing good yourself.
S-I'm doing great also.
What would you consider your music style?
A little west coast style. I basically make music that makes you feel good.
What artist would you say you most sound like?
Sh-Well, do you think we sound like any artist?
S- Well, not exactly. You guys are pretty unique.
Sh-Well sometimes we get compared to Sublime. I mean that's an honor because I love sublime, but I think we have our own style going on.
How did you get started?
Sh-I didn't do it for a long time. I started to make and write songs around middle school, but once I got the song "Buzzin" out, I got with MCA records. As soon as I got with Cisco, it really started to take off. It was a cool style. The beautiful thing is I did it for fun. When we got together we had no real intentions of really making a record. It all kind of happened out of mistake.
What are your largest musical influences?
Sh-Well, artist such as, Andre 300 from Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Tupac, Jackson 5, N.E.R.D. I didn't really get into rap, until later in my career. I grew up listening to artist like the Jackson 5. They were a huge influence on me. But overall, mostly females/girls are the one's who influence me. They are the ones that most of my songs are about.
How is Warped Tour treating you?
Sh-I just arrived in North Carolina. It's so great. It's my 1st tour ever and well my 1st tour with Cisco. There are so many different bands and so many different fans. I'd have to say Florida was our best city so far. It's good to see a lot of different fans coming out to support.
Who would you most like to tour with?
Sh-Well, we have an upcoming tour after Warped, we got a couple tour dates with Gym Class Heroes and Sean Kingston. In the future though, I'd love to tour with Snoop Dog and even cross over to the rock scene and tour with Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Our style is so versatile, so we could do that.
What is your most embarrassing moment you've had on stage?
Sh-I'd probably say where the crowd knows the lyrics to our songs and I accidentally end up mixing up the verses and the fans notice and just start laughing at me.
What's your philosophy on music?
Sh-I just try to make good music and listen to good music. I try to take people away from all the bad stuff that happens in life and if there feeling good, I try to connect what we're saying with how their feeling. Music is like weed. It takes you away from reality for a moment.
Where would you most like to be in 10 years?
Sh-I'll be 33 years old. Damn. I hope I'll be on my 5th record and starring with actors like Denzel Washington in movies.
Can you tell us about your new album "Shwayze"?
Sh-We got a ton of really good songs. It's all done between me and Cisqo. Actually, Dave Navvaro is featured on one of our songs called flashlight. It's one of my favorite songs on the album. The whole album is really well rounded though. This is our first full record, so it's exciting to release.
Where did you get inspiration for the popular song "Buzzin"?
Sh-It was basically just some girls we met at parties. It's all about girls just having fun in the summer time. The beauty of "Buzzin" is that Cisco and I recorded it by ourselves. Cisco was in the studio one day recording, when I walked in and heard it. I was like "This is a really good song." We rearranged it a little and I came on and rapped and we ended up with "Buzzin". It was sort of mistake.
How did you get the name "Shwayze"?
When I started to kick it with Cisco. It was a nick name he had for me. It kind of came from Patrick Swayze and I just added the h in. It wasn't really official until we did a recording with Mickey Avalon and he was like "What up Shwayze?". After that it basically became my name.
What is your favorite band/ artist?
Like I said earlier just basically, Andre 200 from Outkast, Tribe Called Quest, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and of course the oldies I grew up on like Curtis Mayfield, and James Brown. Just basically all across the board.
What does the future hold for you?
Cisco- Good times and sunshine . In 10 years, I want god damn mobiles in Aspen. I want to be like Diddy or Russelll Simons, but white with long hair. I want to follow Rick Reuben's path and be doing like 35 records a year and still skiing mobiles in Aspen.
What do you want to say out there to your fans?
Our record comes out in August and our show debuts on MTV on July 23rd. Thank you for the support . There's a lot more to come!
Cisco- Shout out to Rob and Big.
